Waterloo woman sentenced to prison for fraudulent tax return

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Waterloo woman will spend more than a year in federal prison after pleading guilty to one count of aiding and assisting the preparation and filing of a false and fraudulent tax return in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

Victoria Jones, 49, was sentenced on Tuesday after pleading guilty on Aug. 16.

According to Peter Deegan from the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa, Jones prepared and filed fraudulent tax returns while operating her own tax preparation business.

Deegan says that in the plea agreement, Jones admitted to filing a return for a client that inflated business expenses and itemized deductions and falsely claimed the client was entitled to a tax credit, increasing the client's refund.

Jones also admitted to filing multiple false tax returns between 2007 and 2010. Deegan says Jones admitted that the false returns resulted in at least $30,000 in unwarranted refunds for her clients.

Jones was sentenced to 15 months in prison and fined $15,000. She was also ordered to make $4,833 in restitution the Internal Revenue Service. She will serve one year on supervised release once her prison term is over.

"Tax return preparers have a duty to their clients to prepare tax returns that comply with the law and are accurate," Sybil Smith, IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge, said in a written statement. "Taxpayers should not pay good money for bad advice."

Jones was released following the sentencing, but must surrender to the United States Marshal on Dec. 16.
