Derek Kuehner: Athlete of the Week

WEST UNION (KWWL) -

When the North Fayette Valley football team needs a score -- they can count on running back Derrick Kuehner --

the junior running back has found the endzone 22 times this season, while averaging 9 yards a carry.  That's helped lead the Tigerhawks in to the state semifinals --

- He leads by actions.  He doesn't take a shortcut for anything.  He works hard at everything that's asked of him, makes sure he's doing the right thing all the time.

And doing the right things led to a monster night last Friday.  Kuehner torched the South Winn defense for 239 yards and a staggering 5 touchdowns in the Tigerhawks win --

but he credits the big bodies in front of him for a lot of that success --

- It starts up front, couldn't do it without the guys up front.

He also credits his partner in crime -- Josh Mackey -- who himself has rushed for better than 16-hundred yards -- and Kuehner says that's made him a better player.

- He's a bruiser.  He's getting the hard yards and I'm getting the speedy work outside.  If I get the edge I'll be able to go a ways, but he's a bruiser and he wears the defense out.

- Those 2 compete at everything they do.  It pushes the other as long as it's in fun, competitive nature, but they push each other to the limit in everything.

and for Derrick Kuehner -- pushing those limits has gotten him and the Tigerhawks to the UNI-Dome -- and they're hoping it can also bring them 2 more wins this season.
