New animal control shelter opens in Cedar Rapids

Posted: Updated:

Animals in Cedar Rapids have a new, bigger space as they wait to find their forever families.

On Thursday, the city's new Animal Care and Control Center opens to the public. It's located on the Kirkwood Community College campus.

The shelter has been operating out of a temporary space for five years since the floods of 2008 destroyed the old building.

"It's the first time ever in Cedar Rapids history that there's been an actual animal facility built for animals, and to have this happen with all of us being a part of it, we're really, really excited," said Diane Webber, program manager.

Currently, more than 120 pets are waiting to be adopted.

The new location opens at noon Thursday. It will be open Mondays through Saturdays from 12-5 p.m.
