Dubuque's Donna Ginter Thanksgiving meal still free of charge

A Dubuque Thanksgiving tradition of more than 50 years will continue on free of charge, despite its founder's death and rumors that patrons would have to pay this year.

Donna Ginter's annual Thanksgiving dinner for people in need will be held at 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day at the Knights of Columbus Hall in downtown Dubuque, 781 Locust St.

Founder Donna Ginter died in May at age 84. Her family is continuing on the Thanksgiving tradition.

On Wednesday, Ginter's daughter confirmed she and other organizers of this year's meal have been hearing rumors the event is no longer free.

Organizers assure people the meal, as always, will be free for whomever attends. Also as always, they will accept free-will donations, but no money is required in order to enjoy the dinner.

She said organizers are also currently taking orders for Thanksgiving meal home deliveries for folks who aren't able to get down to the KC Hall. The number to place that free order is 563.583.8535.

Organizers say they're only delivering meals within the city limits of Dubuque and hope to have all orders in by the day before Thanksgiving.
