Des Moines man saves dog from house fire

DES MOINES (AP) -

Officials say a Des Moines man went back into a house fire to save the dog who alerted him of the fire in the first place.

The Des Moines Register reports (http://dmreg.co/1gGqD78 ) Paul Kent was awakened early Tuesday by his barking dog as a fire started to engulf his home.

Steve Brown of the Des Moines Fire Department says Kent tried to put out the fire but eventually left the home to call 911. At some point he realized his dog did not follow him out of the house.

Kent went back into the home and safely retrieved the dog. He sustained minor burns and smoke inhalation in the process.

Brown says the house, which was completely destroyed, had no smoke detectors.
