Cedar Rapids break-in leads to chase and shots fired

A Cedar Rapids man was arrested early Tuesday morning after police say he broke into an apartment, led police on a chase and then shot at officers.

Officer Melissa Henderson says they were called to the Inn Circle Family Resource Center at 5560 6th Street Sw at around 3:21 a.m. Tuesday morning in reference to a disturbance with a weapon.

Henderson says that when officers arrived, they found that a man had broken into the apartment and assaulted two people inside. Police consider their injuries to be "non-life threatening."

After getting a description of the suspect and the vehicle he left in, an officer saw a vehicle matching that description pull onto 6th Street SW.

Henderson says the officer tried to stop the vehicle in the area of 6th Street and Highway 30, but the driver refused to pull over.

Police say the vehicle finally crashed into a parked vehicle at 10th Avenue and 9th Street SW, more than three miles away from the original scene.

After crashing his vehicle, the suspect then ran from the officer, firing at least two shots. The officer was not hit by the gunfire.

Henderson says after setting up a perimeter, they arrested 21-year-old Christopher Steve Forbes with the help of a K9 unit at around 4:30 a.m.

Forbes is charged with first degree burglary, assault/domestic abuse with injury, carrying weapons, attempted murder and felony attempting to elude.
