Students become pen pals with local veterans

Posted: Updated:
Eighth grade students at North Tama decided to honor local veterans at a special assembly and luncheon Veterans Day 2013. However, the event was only the cap to an ongoing pen pal relationship formed months prior.

As part of a lesson unit, students learned about the history of Veterans Day and the importance of caring for others that is demonstrated by those who serve their country. The eighth grade classes then wrote around 300 hand-written letters to veterans living in the Traer and Clutier area, expressing their gratitude. The letters included an invitation to the Veterans Day festivities at their school.

At the event, the eight graders performed patriotic music and poetry, demonstrated the proper way to fold an American flag, dissected the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance, and served Veterans lunch among other things.
