Small town of Garnavillo dedicates big veterans memorial

GARNAVILLO (KWWL) -

One small town dedicated one big veterans memorial Monday afternoon.

Despite the snowy weather, more than 300 people turned out for the dedication of a $38,000 veterans memorial in Garnavillo's city park.

The memorial bears the names of more than 300 veterans, all of whom have ties to the city.

Larry Moser is commander of American Legion Post 723. He spear-headed the project and said the memorial speaks volumes about small town support.

"This is great for this size community. This is above and beyond what I thought would happen, and I'm just tickled to death," Moser said, pausing for a moment to collect himself. "I get choked up."

The local American Legion Post 723 partnered with the community to raise $50,000 for the memorial and its upkeep. The project has been in the works since May of 2012, after Moser returned from a trip to Arlington National Cemetery.
