University of Dubuque to open new Veterans Center

Posted: Updated:
DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The University of Dubuque is creating a Veterans Center to help ease student veterans into civilian and academic life.

It will be located initially in a university-owned house on campus, though future plans include finding it a permanent spot in a campus building.

A Veteran Admission and Assistance Coordinator will help student veterans navigate the ins and outs of academic life, UD president Jeffrey Bullock said.

"It's a way for veterans to be able to come together, to support each other and to continue to grow and, in some cases, heal and recover," Bullock said, adding, "we believe in the power of education."

Plans for the center have been in the works for several years.

Bullock said the university expects to open it no later than fall of 2014, though some of the veteran services may become available next summer.
