UNI Military Student Veteran Center connects veterans and campus

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Molly Skovronski is attending classes at the University of Northern Iowa after serving in the United States Air Force.

"And then I was stationed at Hanscom Air Force Base, which is 20 minutes north of Boston in Massachusetts. I deployed while I was there. I came home. I'm actually still in the Air National Guard," said Skovronski.

After four years of active duty, Skovronski wanted to get an education. She looked up military-friendly schools and found UNI, but she says her first semester was difficult.

"Being an older non-traditional veteran student, I didn't have a lot in common. It's really difficult to relate with 18, 19, 20-year-old students that don't have the experience you do," said Skovronski.

That's why she thinks UNI's Military and Veteran Student Center is so important.

"This center just kind of says to me that we are aware the differences people bring to campus. We're aware of the unique needs and we want to be here to support and see every student be successful," said Julia Heuer, Military and Veterans Student Services Coordinator.

Heuer served in the Army and is now getting her masters at UNI in social work.

She says the center, which just moved to the Maucker Student Union, is designed to help answer questions about benefits while bringing resources in from campus and off campus.

"It also provides a place for military and veteran students to meet and mingle with each other and help take the skills they learned in the military and have that basic understanding and support each other as they're pushing forward with new goals and aspirations," said Heuer.

Heuer says it's also been helpful for faculty and staff members who may have questions on how to better serve veterans.
