Hawkeyes bowl-eligible, beat Purdue 38-14

The Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the Purdue Boilermakers with a score of 38-14 making the Hawks bowl-eligible this year.

The first half of the game was a close scoring battle between the Hawkeyes and the Boilermakers. A two-yard rush from sophomore running back Jordan Canzeri gave Iowa its first touchdown of the game.

But Purdue's Kurt Freytag answered with a touchdown of his own just a few minutes later, tying the game up in the middle of the second quarter.

That touchdown was the first scoring play from the Boilermakers in almost a month, who were scoreless against Michigan State and Ohio State.

Minutes before halftime, Iowa recovered the lead with a 22-yard pass from Jake Rudock to junior wide receiver Kevonte Martin-Manley.

A pair of fumbles early in the third quarter, one from Purdue and one from Iowa, played out in favor of the Hawks, who recovered the ball both times.

The Hawkeyes were able to strengthen their lead with a four-yard rushing touchdown by junior fullback Mark Weisman.

Mike Meyer also kicked a 28-yard field goal adding three more points for Iowa.

The day was dominated by Canzeri's running game, who led Iowa with 165 rushing yards. In comparison, Purdue was led by junior running back Brandon Cottom with 28 yards.

Two more Hawkeye touchdowns put Iowa in a strong lead in the fourth quarter. The first was a three-yard rush by Jake Duzey and the second was a five-yard rush from back-up quarterback C.J. Beathard.

Purdue was able to put seven more points on the board with a late fourth quarter touchdown. But the Hawks ultimately walked away with the win.

Iowa will face Michigan on November 23 at Kinnick Stadium at a time to be determined.
