Hog farm spills thousands of gallons of manure -- again

Posted: Updated:

A southeast Iowa hog farm with a history of manure accidents has spilled thousands of gallons of manure into a Van Buren County tributary of the Des Moines River just weeks after a state inspection.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says a clogged drain line at the Maschhoff Keosauqua Sow Unit caused manure to flow into the creek on Monday.

It was pumped back into a lagoon. The DNR says it is monitoring the spill and will take enforcement action.

The farm houses nearly 7,500 hogs in confinement buildings. They produce about 11 million gallons of manure a year.

Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement says the DNR could have prevented the spill if it had cracked down on the farm during an inspection on Aug. 20.
