Waukon Dynamic Duo: Athletes of the Week

Posted: Updated:

It doesn't matter if running back Marcus Weymiller or quarterback Parker Hesse has the ball -- either one is a threat to take it to the house --

Coach: With his size and his speed, and you have Marcus who can kick to the outside, and he's strong enough and physical enough to run it inside too, we really have 2 kids who could be either Mr. inside or Mr. outside.

Over the past three seasons Weymiller and Hesse have combined for more than 54-hundred rushing yards and have helped lead Waukon's resurgence --

A couple years ago -- the Indians won a total of two games -- after a playoff run last year -- Waukon -- after a dominant win over Dyersville Beckman on Monday --  now finds themselves as one of the favorites to win it all.

Marcus: I think it's expectations, and guys really just stepping up to meet those expectations.  The standards are higher, and we expect the very best, and we expect nothing less than state championship.

But it takes more than 2 players to win a championship -- and Weymiller and Hesse believe they've got the pieces around them.

Marcus: I've got a great o-line, and we've got great playmakers all around me, so it takes the pressure off me.

Parker:  The way he runs, and the way our line blocks, it makes things easy.  I can just kind of sit back and have fun on offense.

But Hesse says having the talent is one thing -- making it work is another.

Parker: We're going t have to come together as a team, and have more trust in each other, believe in each other, and we're going to have to sharpen up, execute our plays, and I think we can do it.
