ISU professor among 11 arrested in Ankeny prostitution sting

Nearly a dozen people have been arrested on prostitution charges following a routine sting operation at an Ankeny hotel, including an Iowa State University professor.

The Des Moines Register reports ( ) Ankeny police arrested 11 people Wednesday at an undisclosed hotel. Authorities rotate prostitution strings among 12 hotels in the city.

The arrests stem from an ad that investigators placed on a website. It received about 200 inquires.

One of those arrested was ISU professor Michael Spurlock, according to the Iowa State Daily, who confirmed the information from the university.

According to Spurlock's profile on ISU's website, he is an associate professor who holds a doctorate from the University of Missouri. He works in the Department of Animal Science.

Police say they focus on individuals who have a presence online and are possibly involved in human trafficking offenses.

The individuals arrested face an aggravated misdemeanor charge of prostitution. Additional information about the circumstances of their arrests has not been released.
