DASH CAM: Attorney: Officer justified in shooting at ISU

Posted: Updated:
AMES (KWWL) -

Story County Attorney Stephen Holmes says the shooting that happened on the Iowa State University campus was justified.

The dash cam video out Thursday shows the dramatic chase and then shoot out that took place on Monday that eventually led to the shooting death of 19-year-old Tyler Comstock.

In the video, the truck is driving at high speeds and ramming police vehicles.

Ames Police Department and Iowa State University Public Safety met with the Story County Attorney to talk about the investigation.

Holmes said the shooting was justified.

Ames police say the suspect had every opportunity to listen to officers and stop, but he did not.

"A suspect still attempting to harm the officers and posing a very real and deadly risk to everyone in the area. Officer McPherson fired into the truck to stop the threat and stop firing once it appeared the threat reduced," said Geoff Huff, PIO, Ames Police Department.

Ames police also added that, during the chase, the driver disregarded every citizen's safety in the area.
