Voters vote down Grout Museum levy

Posted: Updated:

Voters in Waterloo took to the polls on Tuesday and decided not to increase revenue to the Waterloo Grout Museum district by a margin of 54 percent to 46 percent.

Had the measure passed, a levy of 27 cents per $1,000 of assessed value on Waterloo property would have continued.

With the motion failing, the group Citizens for Grout is facing some challenges, including admission price and staffing.

Citizens for Grout said they wanted to extend hours, to make the family friendly entertainment available more often, but now they likely won't be able to do that.

The Grout District is comprised of five different museums, and without the additional funding, members of Citizens for Grout say it could be difficult to keep them all running.

"The bad thing about that is every one of them is used all year round." said Cindy Wells, Co-Chair of Citizens for Grout, "So it would be hard to pick one of those to close or to reduce hours."

The group did say they will attempt to pass the bill again in two years.
