WEST UNION (KWWL) -

Two businesses are destroyed after a fire in downtown West Union. The 911 call came in around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters with West Union, Clermont, Hawkeye, Fayette and Oelwein responded to the fire, which started in the Unionland Feed and Supply Store.

The fire spread to a second business, the Top Hat Tavern.

Firefighters worked quickly, in rainy and windy weather conditions, to contain the fire.

Fayette County Sheriff Marty Fisher said an aerial ladder from Oelwein was a big asset in battling the blaze, which did start during regular business hours at the feed store.

"There were some workers inside and we don't have all the details at this time, but it could be electrical issues with the lighting," said Sheriff Marty Fisher.

Both the Unionland Feed and Supply Store and the Top Hat Tavern were knocked down to contain the heat and the flames. No injuries were reported.

Other businesses and apartments in the downtown were evacuated. Sheriff Fisher said it's possible other businesses and buildings sustained smoke damage because of the fire.
