Police: Man applies for job, then steals from same Marshalltown store

Posted: Updated:

A Chicago man has been accused of stealing merchandise from the same sporting goods store where he had just applied for a job.

The Marshalltown Times-Republican reports (http://bit.ly/1cCBuho ) 18-year-old Lawrence C. Briggs entered the Sports Page store on Oct. 30 and turned in a job application.

Police say Briggs then took off with a T-shirt, a hooded jacket and a baseball cap. The items were estimated to cost about $150.

Police and store management later reviewed security footage. Briggs was called back for a job interview Friday and arrested.

The newspaper reports Briggs admitted to stealing the items. He has been charged with fifth-degree theft and interference with official acts for allegedly refusing to be handcuffed.

Court records do not list an attorney for Briggs.
