Waterloo Black Hawks volunteer with Habitat for Humanity

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The Waterloo Black Hawks teamed up with the Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity to build a new home on Florance Avenue in Waterloo -- a street that has several Habitat for Humanity homes already.

The hockey players spent the day framing interior basement walls for the house.

Throughout the year, the Waterloo Black Hawks participate in community projects across the area.

Last season, the team had over 1,500 hours of community service, setting a new record for the Waterloo hockey team.

Heartland Habitat for Humanity builds houses in Black Hawk, Bremer and Butler counties, and the houses are then sold to families with zero-interest mortgages.

In 2013, Heartland Habitat for Humanity helped 12 families, and they plan to help 12 families in 2014 as well.
