UNI women dominate on the rugby pitch

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Senior Mariah Hinton came to UNI with little intention of playing a college sport, but soon after stepping on campus, that changed.

"I was walking through the union and one of our old captains chased me down and said ‘you look athletic, I'm picking you up at 4:30, and you're coming to practice,'" said Hinton.

Thus started her now 5 year career with the UNI Rugby team.  This season for the Panthers has so far been the most successful in the 20 year history of the program, and Coach Steve Murra has been there since the beginning.

"We knew coming in that we had a really, really good team, probably one of the best teams we ever had," said Murra, "I didn't think we were going to dominate the way we did."

But dominate they have.  In a rough sport that not a lot of people associate with women, or with the state of Iowa for that matter, the Panthers have gone undefeated through their regular season  only getting scored on a total of 3 times.

On Sunday, they hammered Minnesota 66-0 in the final of the Midwest Regional Championship.

 

"To us it means that we put in a lot of hard work on and off the field," said Hinton, "We did the small things we need to do to get here, and now we're going to nationals in Iowa Falls."

 

And the Panthers will take the Midwest's top seed in to the round of 16.  A couple of wins in Iowa Falls would send them to the National Final Four in Florida
