Fire departments urge residents to check smoke alarms

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

With the time change, fire departments across the state are urging people to test their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

They say just taking a few minutes to ensure alarms are working on every level of your home, could save your life.

Most fires happen at night when families are sleeping, so it's also important to know where to place working smoke detectors, to provide the extra seconds needed to get out of a burning home safely.

"It's also important to have the appropriate number of smoke detectors installed in your home," said battalion chief Eric Nurnberg of the Iowa City Fire Department. "We recommend that you have smoke detectors on every level of your home, inside and immediately outside bedrooms."

Nurnberg says this is also a good time to review other safety tips with your family like fire escape plans.
