Thousands of wrestlers from across the country are in Cedar Falls this weekend. It's for the 2013 USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals at the University of Northern Iowa.
Kerry Boumans has been coming to this tournament since it started six years ago.
"It's a four hour trip, but we consider that local. We can bring a lot of our team here," said Boumans.
Boumans is a coach for the Overtime School of Wrestling in Naperville, Illinois. He says they brought a lot of his team to Cedar Falls - 70 wrestlers and their families.
Brian Keck was a wrestling coach for the University of Dubuque when he had a vision six years ago to start a preseason tournament. He says back then, it started with 500 wrestlers. Now, it's grown to include 3000.
"And now it's overwhelming. It's amazing the response we've gotten," said Keck.
Leaders with the Cedar Falls Tourism Bureau estimate 3000 wrestlers and about 5000 spectators will visit Cedar Falls over the weekend. They say the economic impact is about $750,000.
"This part of the country is known for wrestling. You got Iowa, Illinois. We have 650 kids from Illinois here. We have 600 kids from Iowa here. We've got Wisconsin," said Keck.
Keck says they have wrestlers here from 40 states including California, Georgia, and Oregon.
Keck says his group has already signed a contract for next year to have the tournament at the UNI-Dome once again.
