Red Kettle Campaign kicks off November 8th; Volunteers needed

Posted: Updated:

Soon you'll be hearing the sound of bells as the Salvation Army based in Waterloo kicks off its Red Kettle Campaign on Friday, November 8th.

Last year, the campaign brought in more than $721,000. This year's goal is $725,000.

"The goal is realistic, the need is there, we need everybody's help to pitch in," said Captain Jose Tamayo with the Salvation Army.

"The money will be used not only for Christmas but through the whole year. It's not just a number we pick out of the sky. It's a number we really need, and we budget for that," said Sue Hennings with the Salvation Army.

Sue Hennings and Captain Jose Tamayo said the money is essential to fund important services for the community, including the Salvation Army's family activity center and feeding program.

"Our feeding program alone helps meet in three areas of needs. One, people that absolutely need that food. Two, those that are fixed or low income families help stretch the dollars out. Three, people that are seniors or single that would eat alone otherwise," said Tamayo.

There are paid bell ringers, but Tamayo said volunteers are essential to the campaign's success.

"We're having to pay people right now to ring a bell. We don't mind doing that because it provides them an income for the holiday, but it's $60 dollars we're spending to have a bell ringer. So it's giving us back $60 if we have a volunteer there."

This year, there's a new way for volunteers to sign up to ring a bell. Click here and follow the steps.

Another new program this year is Adopt-A-Kettle, in which a group of volunteers will be asked to provide ringers at one kettle for one day.

The red kettles will be out in the community until December 24th.

Registration for Christmas assistance through the salvation army begins Monday, November 4th.

You can register from 9 a.m. to Noon November 4th through 15th or in the evening from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. November 18th through 22nd.
