Caring for Kylee: Classmates rally around Denver girl with leukemia

Posted: Updated:
Denver Elementary students have been focusing on caring recently, as part of the Character Counts program. The lessons these students learned have been taken to heart.

At a school assembly Nov. 1, the fourth grade class gave a presentation about caring, reenacting scenes from the book "The Giving Tree." Afterward, they announced their plan to raise money for a classmate in need.

Kylee Teisinger, a second grader, has been battling a high-risk form of leukemia for the past year. She has undergone weekly treatments in Iowa City and will begin two weeks of radiation in December.

To help pay for Kylee's medical expenses, the school is hosting the "Caring for Kylee Fundraiser." Students and staff will put on a 2K race and spaghetti dinner with all proceeds benefiting Kylee.

The 2K takes place Thursday, Nov. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Denver Athletic Complex. Entry fee is $10.

The spaghetti dinner is Nov. 18 from 4-7 p.m. at Denver Elementary. An Olive Garden spaghetti dinner costs $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Call Denver Elementary at 319-984-5611 to get your advance tickets.
