Waterloo woman hopes to add great-grandfather's name to Firefighters Memorial

DUBUQUE (AP) -

The great-granddaughter of a Dubuque firefighter killed nearly 100 years ago wants to make sure he's recognized for his service.

Kathy Flynn, of Waterloo, is working with the Dubuque Fire Department to add Lt. George Beyer to the Iowa Firefighters Memorial in Coralville. The memorial recognizes firefighters killed in the line of duty.

The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports (http://bit.ly/17TPo7c ) Flynn researched her great-grandfather's death in 1915 and determined he died from injuries sustained from falling off a fire truck on the way to a call.

Flynn contacted the Dubuque Fire Department, which verified the circumstances of Beyer's death and submitted an application to add his name to the memorial.

Flynn and her family will visit Coralville next June for the memorial's annual service so they can see Beyer's name.
