Janesville dedicates new veterans memorial

Posted: Updated:

People in Janesville got their first look at a completed veterans memorial Sunday.

The 8-foot tall memorial featuring all five branches of the military means a lot to Navy veteran Bill Bloker.

Bloker and the Janesville Veterans Memorial Committee had a vision to honor those serving and those who have served from their community. 18 months and nearly $83,000 later, that vision became a reality.

"It just goes to show there's a lot of support for veterans," said Bloker.

Bloker says support for the memorial started with his 12-year-old grandson.

Luke Bloker and his cousins were the first to donate towards the memorial. They raised $100 after selling popcorn. Then two other people gave matching donations for a total of $300.

"Because we knew how important this was to my grandpa and America," said Luke Bloker.

For Luke Bloker, selling popcorn and raising that money was worth it Sunday after seeing the memorial.

"I think it means to me that Janesville needs this so everybody in the community can have a place to remember all the people who served for America," said Bloker.

Bill Bloker says couldn't be more proud of his young grandson.

He says he hopes whoever sees this memorial remembers what all veterans have done for this country.

"So that we can come here and look up at that United States flag and know that we're free. That's what's important and to respect what they see and honor veterans," said Bloker.

The memorial is located at the Janesville Riviera Roose Community Center on Maple Street.
