Historic Spillville ballroom needs repairs to stay open

SPILLVILLE (KWWL) - Tucked along the banks of the Turkey River is the Inwood Ballroom. Nestled in the small town of Spillville, it's one of only a handful of ballrooms left in the state.

"There's only about 15 ballrooms in the state of Iowa, so this is one of them," said co-manager Wanda Cole. "I think it's a very unique, very quaint, vintage ballroom."

Cole, along with managers Mark and Ruth Kuhn, are asking for the public's help in keeping the Inwood open.

"It's worth keeping, it's worth preserving and it's worth sharing with the world," said Cole.

Cole said the managers have no choice but to replace the 5,000 square-foot dining room floor because the wear and tear from three floods has caused it to rot.

"We are to the point where we need to do something, and we need to do it now," she said.

Plans to replace the floor will cost $50,000.

"It's worth it for a building like this," said Cole. "The historical value of the building, the amount it's used by the community, it's worth it. It's worth it."

Managers are hosting a fundraiser to afford the floor replacement. It will be held Friday, Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. at the Inwood.

Burgers, brats and chili will be available for purchase. Drink prices will be reduced all night, and Cole said there will also be a silent auction of vintage Inwood items.

Donations can also be made to the "Inwood Floor Replacement Fund" and mailed to PO Box 26 in Spillville, Iowa, 52168.
