Maquoketa natives give $10 million to University of Iowa for children's medicine

Posted: Updated:

An Arizona couple, originally from Maquoketa, has donated $10 million to the University of Iowa to advance children's medicine.

The gift from Jerre and Mary Joy Stead will create four new faculty chairs in the Department of Pediatrics and improve patient treatments and increase understanding and awareness of pediatric diseases.

The new faculty chairs will be in the areas of pulmonology, nephrology, neurology, and general pediatrics.

The gift, which is the second from the Steads since 2011, is part of UI Health Care's $500 million campaign, Iowa First: Our Campaign for Breakthrough Medicine, which the Steads are co-chairs of.

The campaign launched in 2011 and will conclude in the spring of 2014. The campaign has already surpassed their goal, reaching $505 million with this latest gift.

The Stead's gift in 2011 was also $10 million.

In recognition the pediatrics department will be named the University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics.
