American Red Cross offers safety tips for trick-or-treaters

WATERLOO (KWWL) - Stacy Main's 3-year-old son, Kozmo, had a hard time picking out his Halloween costume Wednesday.

"You can only be one," she told her son, who ended up choosing a Batman costume.

Main said safety is her priority during Halloween, especially when it comes to costumes for her children.

And employees of Halloween Bootique at Crossroads Mall agree.

"We want to try them on and make sure the fit is right," said Tracey Williamson, who has been involved in Halloween retail sales for more than 15 years.

Williamson said parents should make sure there is room for a coat underneath the costume in case the weather is cold.

She also recommended parents add a glow stick or reflector to the costume to help their kids be seen easier at night.

The American Red Cross issued similar recommendations.

It encouraged people to also know how to handle common first aid situations in case a child trips and falls or gets hurt.

It also recommended people welcoming trick-or-treaters to sweep leaves off their sidewalks and steps and restrain any household pets.
