U. of Iowa fraternity buys autographed Kinnick football

A football signed by Iowa Hawkeyes legend Nile Kinnick and other members of the 1939 Hawkeye squad is now among the assets of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at the University of Iowa.

State Rep. Josh Byrnes discovered the football in the basement of his rented home in West Des Moines earlier this year.

Kinnick, who is Iowa's only winner of the Heisman trophy, and later died during World War II, was also a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.

The fraternity eventually heard about the discovery of the football, and offered to buy it. The purchase price has not been disclosed.

In a statement, the current Phi Kappa Psi alumni president John Greenwood said the ball will be available to the public.

"It is our priority to safeguard this football and make it available for Iowans, UI alumni and students and others to experience," he said. "Nile holds such a significant place for so many that it would be a shame for this football to be locked away."

The fraternity, which also has a bronze bust of Kinnick, intends to speak with university officials about displaying both the football and the bust on campus.
