CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Cedar Rapids Police Department and MidAmerican Energy are investigating a recent phone scam in Cedar Rapids.

According to the police department, on Saturday, October 19, someone in Cedar Rapids received a call from someone claiming to be with MidAmerican. The caller told him he was behind on payments. He disagreed. Then the caller changed stories and said there was a gas leak and the customer had to pay to be sure the problem would get fixed.

The MidAmerican customer did make a partial payment through a Green Dot Moneypak prepaid card. A relative of the customer, upon learning the situation, stopped the payment.

Cedar Rapids police say similar problems have been happening statewide. MidAmerican is working with law enforcement officials to try to stop this scam.

Cedar Rapids police recommend asking questions and taking a phone number any time a utility company says you are behind on a payment. They say you should not give financial information over the phone.
