Cedar Rapids man gets 10-year sentence for child stealing

MASON CITY (AP) -

A 34-year-old Cedar Rapids man convicted of child stealing has been given 10 years in prison.

Jonathan Workman was sentenced on Monday in Cerro Gordo County District Court. He'd entered an Alford plea to the charge. In an Alford plea, a defendant doesn't admit the crime but does acknowledge prosecutors likely can prove the charge.

Clear Lake police say that on April 20, surveillance video captured images of Workman trying to take a 6-month-old from a Clear Lake bar. The baby's mother works at the bar but wasn't that day when she stopped to see co-workers and change the child's diaper.

Police say Workman grabbed the baby, but bar patrons blocked his exit. Workman kept saying the baby was his. Eventually he gave the baby back to the mother.
