Iowa's only President honored on anniversary of his death

Posted: Updated:

History lovers gathered in West Branch Sunday to honor the only president from Iowa - Herbert Hoover. Sunday was the anniversary of Hoover's death. A ceremony was held at his burial site in West Branch.

The event almost didn't happen.
The site was closed during the recent government shutdown. Officials with Hoover's Presidential Library and Museum were relieved they could hold the gravesite ceremony.

"It's very significant," said Jerry Fleagle, Executive Director. "This is the 49th anniversary from when President Hoover passed away, one of the greatest humanitarians in the world. And so we're here to honor him today and I think it's important that we remember not only him but his ideas."

Parts of the event were canceled because of the shutdown. A speaker and concert were supposed to be a part of the celebration. Officials hope to re-schedule the concert for February, one of many events they plan to hold next year which will mark the 50th anniversary of Hoover's death.
