Forum held for Waterloo mayor, city council candidates

Posted: Updated:

In the race for Waterloo mayor, city councilman Steve Schmitt is challenging incumbent Buck Clark.

Schmitt said he wants to bring his 30 years of business experience to the position, while Clark said he's already proven himself.

"I'm running on my record," Clark said. "It's irrefutable and I'm proud of it."

"I think in Waterloo a lot of things are going well," Schmitt said. "But there are things we can do better by applying some basic business principles."

The two men met Thursday night in the Waterloo City Council chambers.

The forum was sponsored by the Black Hawk and Bremer League of Women Voters and the Cedar Valley Jaycees.

It featured nine city council candidates, in addition to the mayoral race.

Waterloo's high property taxes were a major talking point for the evening.

Candidates also focused on safety issues in Waterloo, as well as transparency in city government.

The moderator asked candidates what they thought was the biggest issue for Waterloo.

Mayor Clark said it's the aging sewer system.

"It's the biggest issue that we face is getting our hands around this," he said.

But Schmitt said he's more concerned with economic development and public safety.

"In certain area of Waterloo those citizens are not comfortable going out for a walk at night," he said.

Audience members also had an opportunity to write in questions.
