Denver man loses 70 pounds, runs Chicago Marathon

DENVER (KWWL) -

Ryan Tucker's journey of a thousand miles started with just a single step.

In 2011, he was overweight. One day, he was out walking in Denver with his wife and son.

His son was in a stroller, and started crying.

"My wife and I ran home with him," Tucker said. "And that was really my first run."

From there, he just kept going. Now, he's lost more than 70 pounds, and then last Sunday, he laced up his shoes to hit yet another milestone -- completing the Chicago Marathon.

He ran the 26.2 miles in just 5 hours.

"It's hard to put into words, that distance, until you've really done it," Tucker laughed. "Yeah, it's a long ways."

Though he's still sore from the marathon, Tucker said he's never felt better, now that he's in shape.

"The way I feel now is kind of the new normal," Tucker said. "Before was just kind of a daily grind."

But it hasn't been easy -- besides running, he now bikes, swims, and has started eating right.

He said the lifestyle change was all worth it when he crossed the finish line in Chicago, and one feeling ran through him.

"Relief," he said. "Like I said, the last 10 miles were tough."

So what's next for Tucker?

"Lots of people have asked that since Sunday," he said. "My usual rule is, I don't make any of those decisions until I start to feel better."

But whatever happens, it's a pretty safe bet that he'll keep running.
