An Oelwein man accused of shooting his wife multiple times and then injuring himself has died.
Oelwein police chief Jeremy Logan confirms that 44-year-old Myron Dewayne Meador died at around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Police responded to Meador's home at 170 10th Ave. NW just before 7 a.m. Tuesday morning on a report of shots fired.
Responding officers witnessed active gunfire from inside the residence, according to reports.
Meador exited the home with self-inflicted injuries, according to the Oelwein Police Department. Police detained him and provided medical treatment.
He was then transported to Oelwein Mercy Hospital and later transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Meador's wife, 38-year-old Niki Jolene Meador was found inside the home with multiple gunshot wounds, according to police. She was also transported to Oelwein Mercy Hospital and later taken by air ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Logan says that she remains in the hospital.
According to Iowa Courts Online, Myron Meador was arrested in 2001 in Black Hawk County and charged with domestic abuse assault with intent. He pleaded guilty to that charge and received probation.
Another Iowa Courts Online search shows Niki Meador filed for a temporary protective order from Myron Meador in late January 2012, a "Petition for Relief from Domestic Abuse." The protective order was lifted in early February 2012.
Neighbors who spoke to KWWL say they were not aware of any problems at the home until police arrived just after dawn.
The Fayette County Sheriff's Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are also working the case.
Sanders Funeral Services in Waterloo tells KWWL that they are handling Myron's funeral arrangements.
