Wisconsin Assembly to vote on school mascots

Posted: Updated:

Amidst the national debate over sports teams' mascots, one Midwest state plans to take its own action this week.

The Wisconsin Assembly will vote on a Republican bill regarding public schools' mascot nicknames, a bill that would make it more difficult to change a mascot name, according to the Dubuque Telegraph Herald.

Currently in Wisconsin, the State Department of Public Instruction must hold a hearing if one person finds a school mascot name offensive or racist. The school then must prove its mascot is not discriminatory.

The bill would alter this procedure, making a person obtain signatures before a review is held. The Department of Administration would then decide whether that particular mascot name is offensive.

This comes while the debate is ongoing with NFL team names, with one heated debate in particular centered around the Washington Redskins.

A CNN article reported over the weekend many Native Americans are furious the name still stands. Team owners, however, argue the mascot represents "who they are and where they came from," and don't plan on changing the name.

CNN also reported President Obama advising to consider changing the mascot, as he said if he were the team owner, he would think about changing it himself.

According to polls, Washington fans are divided on if the team name should stay or go.

We just put a tent up, put a poncho on, and drink in the rain," Mike Kirk said. Kirk said he's been camping at the same spot for five years now and that it's the best place to be. ...More >>
