UPDATE: EBT card outage restored in Iowa and other states

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

UPDATE:  Xerox says it has restored service for EBT debit cards after an outage of nearly 10 hours Saturday.

Previous story:

A computer glitch has resulted in major anxiety Saturday for those who buy food with EBT cards.

The system which accepts the food stamp debit cards went offline in Iowa and several other states late Saturday morning.

A spokeswoman says a routine check by the vendor, Xerox, resulted in a system failure.

That caused the system to not allow people to buy food at stores or even call to check on their card's status to see what was wrong.

Iowa Department of Human Services spokeswoman Amy Laurentzen McCoy tells KWWL there is a contingency plan for an outage in the state of Iowa.

She says EBT card users can request a voucher form at stores which will allow them $50 in immediate food assistance.

A spokeswoman for Xerox says the issue is being repaired and the system should be restored soon.

The outage is affecting people in several states, including Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, and Mississippi, among others.
