DUBUQUE (KWWL) -
The smell of bacon filled the area in Dubuque Thursday evening. The first ever Dubuque Area Baconfest took place at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds. Shelby Wartick, with Area Residential Care said, "We wanted to have a fundraiser for Area Residential Care and so we thought what could we do that is really fun and where our whole community could get involved and enjoy themselves." "We got the idea from a Baconfest that was in Des Moines," said Wartick.
The festival featured 25 different vendors that were offering samples of bacon treats. Some bacon items featured in the festival included bacon cupcakes, bacon rolled around shrimp, and bacon sushi.
"What it comes down to is it's local businesses, chiefs that are competing for the overall bacon prize of overall best bacon recipe. You can win for that, main dish, desert, beverage or appetizer." Wartick said.
The Dubuque Area Baconfest also featured a bacon eating competition. During the competition five people attempted to eat 2 pounds of bacon. Proceeds from the Baconfest will benefit Area Residential Care.
