Cedar Rapids mayoral candidates address voters at forum

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Candidates for Cedar Rapids mayor sounded off on the issues Thursday night at a League of Women Voters forum.

Both candidates accused the other of not being truthful.

Challenger Greg Hughes says the city has not been transparent in decision making. He also believes they're wasting taxpayer dollars.

"I just hope that we can start having a little trust, a little respect for other people, and realize that you just can't keep taxing them to death," said Hughes.

Incumbent Ron Corbett often defended the city, saying Hughes didn't have all the facts. He also frequently brought up the need to renew the city's Local Option Sales Tax this November, to fix streets.

"It's a fair way to go. people come into our community from outside of Cedar Rapids," said Corbett. "It's a chance for us to have them pay a little bit to help repair the streets they use."

Corbett says if re-elected he'll continue bringing new jobs to the city. Hughes says he'll find ways to lower taxes.
