Athlete of the Week: Janesville's Kendyl Sorge

Posted: Updated:
JANESVILLE (KWWL) -

Janesville junior Kendyl Sorge has been good for a very long time.

She does a lot of things you don't even coach, it's just so natural, has game savvy and work ethic that goes right along with being successful.

Sorge has been the leading hitter for the Wildcats ever since she joined the team as a freshman two years ago -- but it's her play in the back row that's really set her apart --

Janesville Head Coach Shelly Sorenson says, "She doesn't make many mistakes, and she just gets the game of volleyball.  Plays phenomenal defense on the court, and at 5'7", she can also get up and hit the ball really well."

But that's just part of what's made this Janesville team special as the roster's loaded with talent and experience.  In fact, the Wildcats feature 9 seniors on the roster -- and everyone on this team remembers falling in the state semifinals in back to back years -- that's lit a fire under this squad --

Sorge says, "It's so much motivation.  We just want to win it this year since we made it to the semifinals.  We feel like we can make it to the finals this year."

As for Kendyl -- who will eventually continue her career at Northern Iowa -- she has another motivator -- as an 8th grader -- she watched her older sister reach the state finals for the first time in school history -- Now she believes it's her turn --

Sorge says, "It helped a ton.  It made me want to be out there like all of them and then we made it the next year, so it was way fun."

They had high expectations coming in and we're playing some good volleyball at times.  Something to build on as we head to postseason in the next few weeks.
