Group acquires historic bridge in hopes of restoration

WASHINGTON COUNTY (KWWL) -

An historic bridge in Washington County is a little closer to being saved.

On Thursday morning, the Washington County Board of Supervisors unanimously decided to sell the Bunker Mill Bridge to the group trying to save it for $1.

The Bunker Mill Bridge faced demolition after a suspected arson in August.

But the "Friends of Bunker Mill Bridge" is trying to keep that from happening. The group has raised more than $5,000 to restore it.

The groups says total repairs will cost between $400,000 and $460,000.

"There's several grants we can apply for," said FBMB's Dave Finley.  "Then we start local business solicitations, community outreach, fundraising events are gonna be planned, a general outreach to not only the community of Kalona, but throughout Washington County, and hopefully throughout Iowa."

Work to repair the bridge will happen within the next 30 days, as mandated by the county.

"What will happen is the bridge will be lifted off its piers, moved to the shore, repaired and put back into place. That will take approximately 40 days," said Finley, who also cited the oncoming winter season as another reason to get the project going.  "The weather forecast that will be coming, we need to get repairs started as soon as possible and of course the money's going to be a major part of it as we go further into the project."
