Waterloo Council continues to draft dangerous dog rules

WATERLOO (KWWL) - City officials continue to work on drafting an ordinance that will address dangerous dogs and their owners in Waterloo.

Mayor Buck Clark said officials are consulting with veterinarians and examining ordinances from other cities to adopt a new animal control policy that will not be breed-specific.

According to Clark, the new policy will focus heavily on owner responsibility.

"The ultimate hope and the ultimate goal is to make owners of all breeds responsible for the animals that they have. Whether it's an animal with pit bull characteristics or a chihuahua, that they're responsible for these dogs," said Clark.

He said the proposal is still in the early stages, but that it will focus on owner responsibility for all breeds particularly when it comes to registering, licensing and spaying or neutering animals.

"It's still a work in progress," said Clark, noting he expects a proposal to be drafted by Waterloo Animal Control and then voted on by city council members.

Clark encourages citizens to contact their city council members if they have input on the ordinance in the coming weeks.
