Despite shutdown, student conference continues at UNI

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

The TRiO Student Leadership Conference welcomed nearly 200 students from across the state at the University of Northern Iowa Oct. 9.

The program is catered to low-income, disabled, or first-generation college students. High school juniors and seniors, as well as college students, attended the conference.

A range of talks and work sessions aimed to empower these individuals.

TRiO programs exist at various schools to provide advisory and support services.

As a federally-funded service, the government shutdown has affected TRiO. However, Iowa TRiO gets funds from a grant every five years, so the immediate statewide impact is not significant.
