Trial by fire: Breugger's Bagels rebuilds in downtown Iowa City

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Breugger's Bagels will soon be returning to downtown Iowa City.

More than two years ago, the company's downtown location on Iowa Avenue caught fire. It was heavily damaged and was torn down a couple of months later.

The owners have rebuilt and made many improvements, including more seating and an espresso bar. On Monday, the new restaurant will open.

The company's founder is from Iowa City and the downtown location was one of the first ones built back in 1989.

"We're excited to be open, excited to be serving great bagels, and Monday I'm sure can't come soon enough for a lot of folks," said Jay Kasparian, marketing manager.

The bakery opens at 6 a.m. on Monday. The first 30 customers in line will get a bottomless mug, good for free drinks for the rest of the year.
