NEW HARTFORD (KWWL) -
Police in New Hartford are searching for an older man in a black van after a possible abduction attempt Saturday afternoon.
A New Hartford woman said her 8-year-old daughter was outside of a hair salon near New Hartford City Hall around 2 p.m. Saturday when she was approached by a black van with "lots of windows," according to the Butler County Sheriff's Office.
The woman said her daughter said the man driving the van told the girl there was a family emergency and she needed to get in the van so he could take her to her mother, according to the police report.
The girl then ran away from the van and into the hair salon where her mother was located, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The driver is described as an older man with a gray beard and mustache. He was wearing a "farmer's cap" and smoking at the time, according to the report.
The Sheriff's Office is still investigating, and area schools have been notified of the incident.
