Waterloo Fire Rescue honor those killed in the line of duty

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Members of Waterloo Fire Rescue remembered and honored those killed in the line of duty Sunday.

The ceremony is part of the department's kick off of Fire Prevention Week.

Fire officials rang a bell while reading off names of those lives lost while serving in the department. They say before cell phones and pagers, the fire department would ring the bell notifying them someone had died.

"The fire department is rich in tradition and we never want to forget those that served before us and especially those who have given the ultimate sacrifice as far as trying to save and protect life and property for the citizens of Waterloo and for citizens across the country," said Shane Schellhorn, Waterloo Fire Rescue.

As part of Fire Prevention Week, Waterloo fire officials say this is a good time to check your smoke detectors.
