Firefighters in Cedar Rapids respond to chlorine leak at water treatment plant

Firefighters in Cedar Rapids responded to a chlorine leak at the Northwest Water Treatment Plant around 5:45 p.m. Friday.

Water Department employees advised an alarm had activated in the chlorine cylinder room and showed the release of chlorine gas. A chemical scrubber activates automatically with the alarm, which ventilates the cylinder room.

There were no Water Department employees in the cylinder room. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters arrived on scene and a haz-mat team checked chlorine levels and identified the source of the leak.

Around 7:45 p.m. Friday firefighters were able to stop the leak that was found in a line that links a chlorine cylinder to a manifold.

The Northwest Water Distribution Plant was off-line from 5:30 p.m. to approximately 8:00 p.m.

There was no contamination of water that was distributed to the public.
