PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (KWWL) -

11 people employed at a business in Platteville, Wis. lost their jobs Thursday.

The company is Irvine, Calif.-based Spireon, which makes and sells GPS and other vehicle-tracking devices and services for company fleets. It's called mobile resource management, in industry jargon.

Locally, Spireon has branches in Dyersville and Platteville. Nobody at the Dyersville location lost his or her job, according to the company's vice president of integrated marketing Corinna Tutor. The news about the Platteville losses, however, surprised the executive director of the Platteville Area Chamber of Commerce, Kathy Kopp.

"They're on a growth trend, upwardly, and they expected to have upwards of 100 employees by the end of the year, so this information is a shock," Kopp said Friday. "We weren't aware that there was going to be any kind of a change."

There remain about 10 workers at the Platteville location, which handles sales for the company.

For the 11 people let go, there is help available. The Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board is holding a rapid response session for the people who lost their jobs. That will be on Thurs., Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. in the library of Platteville's Southwest Tech Campus, at 110 West Adams Street.

The session will include information on how to file for unemployment, retraining opportunities and resume writing.

Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board CEO Bob Borremans said he acknowledges the situation looks bleak to the people who just lost their jobs but he encourages them to see this as a next step. He said there are definitely job opportunities in the Platteville and tri-state area, unlike five years ago during the height of the recession.

Tutor said these were not layoffs, that the company is re-aligning for its continued growth in the fleet market.

Spireon has grown rapidly, nearly doubling in size over the past two years. In response to this growth, the Executive Leadership Team of Spireon is focused on and investing in further infrastructure and internal processes to ensure it is charting a successful course for the future," the company said in a statement Tutor released. "As the fastest growing company in the Fleet segment, Spireon has also sharpened its strategy and made some minor adjustments to its Platteville Sales Center to enable it to execute effectively during its next stages of growth. These changes will position us for expansion in the Fleet market as the company continues to lead the way in Mobile Resource Management (MRM)."
