CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -
Hundreds of people welcomed the 10th President to the University of Northern Iowa on Friday during an installation ceremony.
President William Ruud told the crowd his goals as the university's new president are to strengthen the relationship between faculty and students and attract more students not only from Iowa, but across the country.
"This university's going places -- great students, great faculty, great staff, great administrators -- and we are the backbone of Iowa," said Ruud.
"We produce the folks that make Iowa get going, so we're excited about it," he said.
Hundreds of people packed inside the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center for the 10:00 a.m. installation where the transfer of authority was marked when a university medallion was placed around Ruud's neck; the ceremony lasted a little longer than an hour, and a reception followed.
Before coming to UNI, Ruud served as the 15th president of Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.
